ADDITIVE FREE PEANUT BUTTER
In our Supermarket “Switch this for That” series, today we are looking at Additive Free Peanut Butter.
Ingredients:
Roasted Peanuts (85%), Vegetable Oils (Contains Antioxidant (320)), Sugar, Salt.
Ingredients:
Just Roasted Peanuts (99.3%) & Salt.
What is the main difference between these two peanut butters?
There is one little ingredient that makes a HUGE difference!
In the Vegetable oil is the Antioxidant 320.
What is Antioxidant 320?
Antioxidant 320 is Butylated hydroxyanisole.
This ingredient is banned in some countries.
This ingredient is PETROLEUM derived.
Why is Antioxidant 320 used?
Most people when they see the word ‘Antioxidant” think it is a good ingredient. It is a little misleading! This antioxidant is synthetic.
It is used to prevent oils and fats going rancid.
What are the potential effects of Antioxidant 320?
The potential effects* of this one additive is huge:
- Asthma
- Hives
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Insomnia* Sourced from Chemical Maze
It is so easy to make this one simple switch!
Thanks for the info.
You are welcome Edward 🙂
The problem though is that it’s the only peanut butter that tastes good. The others are all so unpleasant and my son refuses any other type. It’s the only spread he eats so limiting!
100% real nuts tastes best for me. Unfortunately additives hijack our tastebuds. Once you are additive free, in as little as a couple of weeks your taste buds adapt and change.
we buy aussie where possible, until we checked our favorite p/b only to find item 320 upon researching to be not too good for this old body, not to mention added “vegetable” oil, whats wrong with peanut oil (derr)
also checked an aussie p/b that had 25% less fat only to find 23% less peanuts (go figure) PLUS23% filler, wheat derived…got refund on unopened jar and balance recycled
Dyed in the wool bega peanut paste user but no more after reading this
Thanks for your comment John. Glad we could be of assistance 🙂
Is it safe for a dog to have 320 or should I buy her the other one ?
I personally would try to avoid giving to pets also.
We normally buy 100% peanuts local. We are isolating & a friend did some shopping for us & bought the Bega no added sugar or salt but with9 % 320 & veg oil. Both me and my 15 yo could not believe how horrible it tastes & felt. It went in the bin. Then we went looking for info and found your v helpful site thank you. Would be interesting to know what veggie they use. I agree with many of the other comments.
Glad you found us! It’s surprising what they put in peanut butter! All you need is 100% peanuts 🙂
Yes please, I’ve been going additive free for some time but I’d love your very handy website to help me further. Thank you
i came across a local peanut butter company which contains E471 emulsifier, is that harmful?
You need to be aware that these emulsifiers can cause:
– allergic and hypersensitive reactions
– gastrointestinal ailments
Peanut butter shouldn’t have any other ingredients besides peanuts and salt.
